Whether we use our voices as professional singers, or simply to communicate one-to-one with our students, the journey from thought to verbal expression depends on our use of self. If we bring conscious awareness to the physical structures of the voice, we can improve both our voices and our whole physical coordination.

We explore all aspects of this physical expression, from breathing, to use of jaw, tongue, and facial structure. How do we develop ease of expression? How do we access power for big or emotional moments? What is resonance? How do we reconcile the acoustics of the room and the acoustics of the human voice? How do we find our own unique, or authentic sound? How might we speak our own truth? Can we enjoy our own freedom of expression?

Teachers and trainees interested in attending may contact the Director of Training, Susan Sinclair, 416 603 2650.  The fee for the 2-day session will be $300+HST.

Following a degree in psychology from the University of Wisconsin, and an MA from the University of Chicago. Kathryn Armour studied singing for 5 years in Florence, Italy, and then returned to the US to continue her studies (in voice and acting) in New York City. She was a finalist in both the Pavarotti and Metropolitan Opera contests and has performed in all genres from opera to cabaret.  Kathryn’s mother was a Broadway performer, and Kathryn grew up loving and singing this music. The Smithsonian Institution commissioned her to create a series of concert/lectures on American Popular Music. She taught voice at New York University (in the CAP21 Music Theatre Conservatory) for 17 years, and her students have performed on Broadway and on tour in such shows as 42ndStreet, Grease, La Cage aux Folles, Seussical, South Pacific, West Side Story, Wicked, Cabaret, The Last Ship, Into the Woods, and Finding Neverland.  Kathryn is honored to be an affiliated artist of The Fiasco Theater Company. She is a skilled musician, and plays the piano for her students in her Manhattan studio. She speaks fluent German and Italian and coaches operatic and song literature in these languages. She also coaches Broadway repertoire.  Kathryn is a fully certified and insured teacher of the Alexander Technique.  She was a presenter at the International Congress of the Alexander Technique in Limerick, Ireland, in August 2015.

We are designed for movement. Inherent in our design is an incredible capacity for ease, flexibility, power and expressiveness; whether we are dancing, hammering a nail, working at a computer, singing or simply walking. All too often we unknowingly interfere with this design; replacing energy, delight, and grace with effort, tension and fatigue.

This three and a half day workshop is designed for both new and experienced students of the Alexander Technique as well as those considering teacher training. We will study basic principles of Alexander’s work, applying the technique to the interests of the participants: work skills, daily activities, playing music or sports, voice or dance.

Participants are also invited to attend the Saturday evening “Thinking in Activity” class scheduled for July 7, 7-9pm.

Join Studio Director, Susan Sinclair and Visiting Adjunct Teacher and Physiotherapist, Sakiko Ishitsubo for this intensive three and one-half day workshop.
